the problem
Children are exposed to danger when social media algorithms suggest their accounts to unknown or distant adults.

our mission
Safe Clicks for Children exists to protect minors from unwanted online contact by advocating for technology companies to stop suggesting minors’ accounts to adult users through connection or friend recommendations. We promote safe online boundaries, educate families about digital consent, and encourage policies where minors retain control over who can connect with them online.

Parents and Kids Should Control Connections,
Not Algorithms
Instagram suggested my account to an adult who began harassing me after I blocked them. As children, we are taught that adults should not ask us for directions—so why is social media promoting children’s accounts to adults? Platforms cannot know which adults are safe, so control should lie with parents and children, allowing only them to decide who can access a child’s account. This experience inspired me to found Safe Clicks, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing unsafe connections between children and adults online.
On social media, children’s accounts are often suggested to adults simply because of shared connections—but kids rarely know who those adults are or why they want to connect. Safe Clicks for Children believes safety must come first: children’s accounts should never be automatically promoted to adults. Instead, if kids want to connect with an adult, they should be able to initiate that connection themselves. At a minimum, platforms should give parents and children the option to prevent accounts from being suggested to adults. This simple change could protect millions of children and restore control where it belongs—with families, not algorithms.
